My Plant Powered Journey: A Lifestyle Story

Hey there! Let me share a little about how my plant powered journey began—because, honestly, it’s been quite the ride.

The High School Spark

It all started when I was about 14. Every spring, my high school put on a Broadway play, and I absolutely loved being part of it—even if I never landed a leading role. In 1980, I was cast as a “hot box girl” in Guys and Dolls. For a shy, bookish kid like me, slipping into fishnets, a leotard, high heels, and pearls was pure joy. It was my chance to step out of my shell and just have fun.

But on opening night, as I was getting ready backstage, a friend noticed big red blotches running down my spine. I checked and found red splotches on every joint and a butterfly-shaped rash on my face. I didn’t get to go onstage that night, and I was heartbroken.

Health Mysteries and a Turning Point

Doctors thought it might be lupus or arthritis, but no one could figure it out. I was poked, prodded, scanned, and medicated, but nothing helped. I felt miserable, tired, and lost.

Around the same time, a fast food chain in my town started serving chicken, and everyone was excited. I tried it, but soon after, I ended up in the hospital with salmonella. I lost a lot of weight and just couldn’t stomach meat anymore—it made me feel bloated and uncomfortable.

Even though my family was all about “meat and potatoes,” I convinced my parents to let me try a plant powered lifestyle. They didn’t really get it, but they let me do my thing.

Learning to Nourish with Plants

Recovering from salmonella, I had to figure out how to get enough nutrition from fresh veggies—not the canned or frozen kind that were everywhere in the ‘80s. It wasn’t easy, but as I experimented, I noticed my energy coming back. The red blotches and rash faded, and I started to feel like myself again.

I just knew, deep down, that fresh fruits and veggies were making the difference.

The Journey Continues

Over the years, I bounced between plant powered and sometimes eating a little meat. But when I hit my mid-forties and menopause, I was back to feeling tired, foggy, and achy. Doctors blamed menopause and offered meds, but no one really tried to get to the root of the problem.

So, I started digging into the mind-body-soul connection. I learned about using plants for specific health needs, using supplements when necessary, and preparing food with intention. I also realized that “nourishment” isn’t just about what we eat—it’s about what we put on our skin, what we clean our homes with, and how we care for our minds and spirits.

I started choosing clean products—no harsh chemicals or animal products—for my home, my body, and my self-care. I discovered that every choice matters for feeling vibrant and whole.
