When it comes to health, inspiration is powerful, but inspiration alone often fades. The real transformation begins when we align our deepest values with clear, structured goals. That’s where SMART goals come in.
Why Values Come First
Values are your personal compass. They represent what matters most to you, whether that’s energy for your family, strength for your career, or resilience for the decades ahead. When goals are anchored to values, they stop being just another item on a to-do list. Instead, they become part of how you live and lead.
For example, if you value connection, your SMART goal might be:
“I will prepare a plant-forward meal twice a week and invite a friend or family member to share it with me.”
If you value vitality, your goal could be:
“I will walk briskly for 20 minutes three mornings a week to fuel my energy before work.”
When goals reflect your values, they feel less like discipline and more like an act of self-alignment.
How to Determine Your Values
If you’re unsure where to start, here are a few ways to uncover your values:
Reflect on peak moments. Think about times you felt most alive. What qualities were present—growth, connection, freedom, health?
Notice what frustrates you. Sometimes, our triggers highlight what we value. If you get frustrated when your time is wasted, perhaps you deeply value efficiency or purpose.
Ask: “What do I want my life to stand for?” This big-picture question reveals guiding values like integrity, health, or community.
Write down 3–5 values that feel most important. These become your anchors.
“I have 8 values: Honesty, Focus, Creativity, Joy, Togetherness, Resilience, and Action. I have them on a sticky note on my bathroom mirror so I see them every day.”, Lori Willinski, Plant Powered Founder
SMART Goals + Values = Sustainable Change
SMART goals transform broad intentions into specific, measurable actions. When paired with your values, they become unstoppable.
SMART stands for:
Specific – Define exactly what you want to do.
Measurable – Track your progress in a clear way.
Achievable – Make sure it’s realistic in your current season of life.
Relevant – Connect the goal to your values.
Time-bound – Set a deadline to create momentum.
Here’s an example:
✨ Value: Health & Energy
🌱 SMART Goal: “I will prepare a Mediterranean lentil salad twice a week for lunch instead of takeout for the next 30 days.”
This isn’t just about eating lentils—it’s about nourishing boldly and living vibrantly in alignment with your values.
Living Vibrantly, Nourishing Boldly
Living vibrantly means showing up with clarity, confidence, and energy for the life you’re creating. Nourishing boldly means making intentional choices about what goes on your plate, into your body, and into your daily routines.
SMART goals give you the structure. Your values give you the meaning. Together, they create a personal blueprint for health and life that lasts.
✅ Action Step: Take 10 minutes this week to list your top 3 values. Then, write one SMART goal that reflects one of those values. Notice how much easier it feels to commit when your goal is an expression of who you are.
